Maito Mayto Exploring the spectacular unspoiled (so far) just south of Puerto Vallarta.

EXPLORING THE SOUTH

Driving to Mayto, Tehuamixtle, and beyond
By John Van *** • September 2011

Mayto BeachFall is just around the corner and people are planning their winter vacations or preparing to return to seasonal homes in Mexico for the ideal climate during the fall, winter and early spring months. If you are in the Puerto Vallarta area, you may want to make a short trip south and discover what many are calling paradise along the south coast of Cabo Corrientes. This includes Mayto beach and the fishing village of Tehuamixtle.

Mayto BeachMore and more people are making the Mayto area their vacation destination. A week or more in the area is not only a bargain - it is like having your own beach. No vendors, very few people, welcoming friendly locals and plenty of sunshine. This amazing stretch of coast was almost impossible to access just a few years ago. That has changed and now what was a four- wheel drive only road is almost 50 percent surfaced. Still many are intimidated by stories from the past. That is good news for those who are a bit adventurous and are looking for a quiet peaceful place.

Mayto BeachHow to get to Mayto? I have been corrected for making some errors in directions in the past. I will try to be as accurate as I can. First you need to get to El Tuito. Coming from Puerto Vallarta, you head south on highway 200, past the Botanical Gardens and up into the forested mountain area. Driving from the Pemex in Vallarta where the highway starts, it takes 45 minutes to one hour to reach El Tuito. Tuito has a couple of exits. The first one is the new four-lane entrance, which is rather grand. The second is farther down the road where you come to what looks like a roadside community with a lot of activity. Turn right off the highway at either one. You will want to get to the plaza or town square, which is away from the highway. Both exits will take you there. It is hard to miss the plaza. Once you find the plaza, which is a good place to stop and look around at this historic town - you should see a sign at the southwest corner. This is where the road to Mayto starts. Make sure you see signs for the Mayto Hotel. If you are in doubt, just ask. Leaving El Tuito, there is a very short patch of dirt road that immediately becomes concrete. Continue on this road, which is still in the process of being surfaced. There may be a rough spot or two. About halfway you reach the community of Llano Grande. There is a little jog in the road, however if you stay on the cobbles and look for Mayto Hotel signs, you will be fine. Continue and you will again find a surfaced stretch of road. Another eight kilometers and you are in Mayto. The beach is just ten minutes farther. From Tuito allow about one - one and a half hours. I have made it in 45 minutes, however I know the road. Drive safe and have fun in paradise!

I love the article written by John Van,

This is truly one of the wonders of the world.

Still not developed still free of massive resorts and condo towers.

We find it takes between 1.5 to 2.5 hrs depending on how or what you drive.

Have made it from Maito to PV in 1.5 hrs on dual sport with my daughter on the back. Most is is brand new pavement from El tuito to Mayto. But there is still a stretch in the middle that is not so good.

As per author that is good and bad. When this road is completed it will bring tons more people, we are seeing developers coming in buying it up.

There are still deals to be had but far and few between. Most parcels are sold as huge acreage to developers. There is ONE FANTASTIC opportunity that will for those who act quickly be an incredible investment and ability to OWN TItled lot on the unbelievable beach. 1st 32 lots are available as unreal deeply discounted pricing starting at only 30k and range up to 150k.. Yes that is right.. i think they lft of or forgot a 0 on those prices. Good for US who love and want to have a place in Maito.. Title lot on the beach 30k,,, thats a winner. Estimated value 5 years from now 350,000 to 500,000...

Get yours next to ours!

See you in paradise.
